Helsinki today - is a lively and modern city with more than half a million people. The external appearance of Helsinki has undergone significant changes since it was founded by King Gustav Vasa in 1550. In 1812 Helsinki became the capital of the Grand Duchy of Finland, and in 1917 - the capital of the independent Republic of Finland.
