Earth around Gorokhovets already in the XI century were settled by Slavs. The initial nucleus of the city was Detinets, located on St. Nicholas Hill. The height of its embankments, built in the XII century, reached five meters.

In 1239 Gorohovets was the Mongol-Tatars burned to the ground, then life in the city for a long time stands still. In the XV century Gorohovets belonged to Nizhny Novgorod, and then the Prince of Moscow and the number of centers parish.

In the 1539 Parish experienced a shift of the Kazan Tatars and was ruined. According to legend, when enemies besieged Gorohovets over the mountain into the sunset came the image of a huge warrior with a sword in his hands. The enemy retreated in panic, and the place from that time called in Puzhalovoy mountain. This hill, separated from the ancient Detinets deep ravine, now it is the city park.

In the XVII-XVIII centuries, was built Nikolsky Monastery. In his appearance dominates two-story Trinity Cathedral (1681-1689).

After the February Revolution, when the March and July in the province of Vladimir, a wave of workers' demonstrations, enterprises Gorokhovets in June, without prior arrangement has been introduced an 8-hour workday. In July 1917, located in the city Regiment refused to go to the front - said campaigning Bolsheviks. In the early days of the Bolshevik Revolution, led by K. Kiselev established in the Soviet power.

During the Great Patriotic War, 17 thousand gorohovchan went to the front, of which 39 people participated in the heroic defense of the Brest Fortress. Eleven people were in the war hero of the Soviet Union. In the name of one of them, AV Besedina, called the street of the city.
