The island was built a very extensive network of roads, the length of about 3100 km, only a portion of which, however, is asphalted. Lightly populated areas in the south-west and north-east, as well as in the central part of the island roads mostly covered with gravel.

On highway 10 from Kuressaare almost every day, followed by buses in Tallinn, Parnu and Tartu. Shipboard communication with the other islands and the mainland is supported through the ports Mõntu (with Ventspils in Latvia), Roomassaare (with Abruka and Ruhnu) and Triygi (with cheese on Hiiumaa). In Roomassaare is the only airport on the island.

Prior to the main city of Saaremaa - Kuressaare - can be reached by ferry from Tallinn and Latvia's Ventspils.
